Beckett, Samuel ~ Waiting For Godot : With The Scarce Original Criterion Theatre Programme
Faber and Faber : 1956
The First UK printing published by faber and Faber in 1965. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just the usual offsetting to the end papers and a little dustiness to the upper text-block. Original yellow cloth with the titling in red. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The publisher's note tipped-in after the title page as called for. This note refers to the play's censoring by the Lord Chamberlain and that the text used was from The Criterion Theatre's production in 1955. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. It bears the correct price of 9s. 6d. to the front lower flap. Light toning to the spine and flap edges. A little rubbing and light creasing at the spine tips with a tiny tear and loss at the upper rear corner. The wrapper is protected in a loose Brodart archival cover. Accompanied by the original 'Criterion Theatre' programme which is in near Fine condition. The theatre's price sticker has been neatly cut to open the programme. A pencil date of '17 Oct 55' to the upper front cover which presumably refers to the date purchased. Light edge wear. 'Waiting for Godot' was first performed on 5th January 1953 in Paris and the English-language version premiered on the 3rd August 1955 At 'The Arts Theatre' before moving on and opening at The Criterion Theatre, London on 12th September 1955. The principal cast as detailed in the theatre programme and the book only differ in the role of 'Vladimir'. The text of this first issue was translated from the original French by Beckett himself.
