A. Z. Zwemmer (London) : 1931
The First UK printing published by A. Z. Zwemmer (London) in 1931. One of only 300 copies (There were also ten copies on hand made paper, numbered and signed by the author). The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. It measures 13 x 16 cm. Mild pushing at the spine ends with two small closed tears at the upper spine folds. Age related darkening to the board edges. Some toning to the text block and page edges. A previous owner's gift inscription dated 1944 to the front blank end paper. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Toning to the spine and edges. Two closed tears to the front flap fold. The wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book consists of an introduction by Arne Novak (Czech literary historian and critic, specialist in German and Czech studies.) and over 90 full page striking woodcuts by Helena Bochořáková-Dittrichová. This (her first work), is considered to be the first graphic novel (or wordless novel) published by a woman. The work consists of a story about the day-to-day activities of a sheltered girl in a middle-class family, and is told entirely through woodcuts. First published as 'Enfance' in 1930 in Paris, the book was later published in this, the first English edition by the British bookshop and gallery A. Zwemmer, formerly of Charing Cross Road, London. Very Scarce with such attributes.
