The First UK printing published by Kegan Paul, Trench, and Co. Ltd, London in 1896. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Small 8vo, original japon backed paper boards with a printed label on the spine. The correct First issue with the 'A' state label. The spine label and covers are lightly rubbed and toned. Some pushing to the spine ends. Some chipping to the spine label. Mild offsetting to the end papers, otherwise a very good copy which is housed in a custom solander box with gilt titling. One of fewer than 250 copies in this state: The first edition consisted of 500 copies, of which 150 were exported to the United States with a 1897 title page, 250 were bound for the first British issue and 100 bound up slightly later in a second state binding for Britain (Carter and Sparrow and White 2. Hayward 305 : ODNB). 'A Shropshire Lad', one of the most famous and endearing volumes of English poetry, was printed at the poet's expense after the manuscript was rejected by Macmillan. A scarce association copy.
