Hughes, Thomas : Tom Brown’s School Days : The Author Richard Adam’s Copy : Bound By Bayntum Riviere
Macmillan and Co, Cambridge : 1857
The First UK printing published by Macmillan and Co, Cambridge in 1857. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition, bound by Bayntun Riviere in full blue morocco, five raised bands, spine gilt in compartments with gilt titling and tooling. Hand made marbled paper end-papers and gilt to all edges of the text-block. The boards are slightly bowed and there is some light fading of the colouring to the spine. Free from inscriptions. Occasional light spotting to the text. This copy was from the library of the celebrated author Richard Adams (Watership Down) with his suitably lagomorphic bookplate to the front end paper. An excellent copy of the First edition of the author's classic novel celebrating the ethos of nineteenth-century English Public Schools. The book's popularity 'must be linked to its powerful structuring myth in which Rugby School is England, and the experience of the boy, learning self-reliance so that authority may be delegated to him, symbolises the experience of the man of the governing class. The novel's opening paragraphs constitute one of the great evocations of Englishness. Vivid scenes of the trouncing of bullies, and the glories of the cricket and football fields, enliven the narrative, which also has much emphasis on boxing, for Hughes believed passionately in the healthiness and manliness of a fair fight' (ODNB). A handsome association copy of a very scarce title rarely found as the first issue. Collectible.
