McAlmon ~ Distinguished Air : Grim Fairy Tales
Contact Editions at The Three Mountains Press, Paris : 1925
Printed for Contact Editions at The Three Mountains Press, Paris, 1925. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Only one hundred numbered copies on Arches Paper (total edition was 115 copies) were issued. This is the 'Author's Proof' as stated on the limitation page, with H/W corrections on pages 73 and 151, presumed by the author. Quarter roan with marbled boards and only very light rubbing to the edges. Light rubbing and pushing at the spine ends. A little dustiness to the upper text-block. The gilt titling and decorations to the spine remain bright. Mild toning to the board edges. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Internally very clean and bright with the blue silk ribbon marker still present. The publisher's Errata Slip issued with the first issue is not present as this was not required for the Author's Proof. Protected in a loose archival Mylar cover. This author proof is identical in format to the first issue subsequently issued. It is thought that there were only two or three author proofs issued. 'Most notably, in Distinguished Air: Grim Fairy Tales (1925) McAlmon recorded life in the gay subculture of Berlin with a frankness that was unequaled in the era. Compared to his stories, Christopher Isherwood's later and more famous tales of the city seem almost tame' - Richard G. Mann, GLBTQ (online). YOUNG 1755. McAlmon also typed and edited the handwritten manuscript of Ulysses by James Joyce, with whom he had a friendship. A sharp copy of a very scarce collectible title.
