Nicholson, William ~ The Pirate Twins
Faber and Faber : 1929
The First (and only state) UK printing. No date but published in 1929 by Faber & Faber. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Minor rubbing to the corners and spine ends. Slight splitting along small areas of the spine folds. A few minor finger marks to the edges of a few pages but the inside board dedication panel is clear from any ink. The binding remains tight with just early separation of the gathering between pages 6-7. A very nice copy with pictorial pastedowns and 26 illustrations by Nicholson, with calligraphic text below. This is the second of Nicholson's books for children. A little girl finds two small, black dolls on the beach. Mary takes the dolls home and cares for them until one day they leave a note 'Gone for ever. Don't worry; Back soon'. The pirate twins set off to sea for more adventures, but every year they come home for Mary's birthday. This was one of only a small handful of books that were published solely in Nicholson's name. He undertook work on other authors books including Margery Williams' 'The Velveteen Rabbit' and also designed some early dust jackets for his son-in-law Robert Graves. Collectible.
