Whitaker, Malachi ~ Frost In April : With The Scarce Wrapper
Jonathan Cape, London : 1929
The First UK printing published by Jonathan Cape in 1929. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition with moderate pushing and some light fading to the spine ends corresponding to the losses in the wrapper. A hint of ghosting of the spine but the gilt titling remains very bright. Some light toning to the text-block with some mild offsetting to the blank end-papers. Free from inscriptions. The extremely scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. Some edge-wear with a little loss, rubbing and creasing at the spine ends and the corners. A small chip to the upper rear edge. Some nicks, creasing and a few closed tears to the edges. Slight toning to the spine with some light rubbing to the folds but the artwork still remains very bright. The Bangley period wrapper artwork appears very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Marjorie Olive Whitaker, better known under her pseudonym 'Malachi Whitaker', was noted for her short stories and an autobiography. She wrote nearly 100 stories published in four collections by Jonathan Cape in the 1920s and 1930s. Her talent was recognised by contemporaries such as Vita Sackville-West compared her to Katherine Mansfield, and she was known as the 'Bradford Chekhov'. A very scarce title with its wrapper. Collectible.
