The second novel by Banks to be set outside of his famous 'Culture' series, this another Science Fiction tale which centres around the concept of a central upload of mindstates which allows the dead to be reincarnated numerous times. The plot focuses on Count Alandre Sessine VII - who has died numerous times and is on his final life - and his attempts to find his killer. The story is also set against the backdrop of 'the Encroachment', as the solar system drifts into a into an interstellar molecular cloud, the consequences of which will be the dimming and eventual extinguishing of the Sun, ending life on Earth. Seldom found with the wrapper unfaded to the spine.
