Barker, George ~ The Dead Seagull : Inscribed By The Author
John Lehmann, London : 1950
The First UK printing published by John Lehmann, London in 1950. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with light pushing and a hint of fading at the spine tips. Slight dustiness to the upper text-block with a little offsetting to the blank end-papers. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition with shallow chipping to the spine ends and corners. The blank rear panel is remarkably clean for its age. The Humphrey Spender wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Inscribed by the author on the front blank end-paper : 'George Baker for Florence Olsen'. A 'poet's novel' whose 'subject is love' (wrapper blurb). In particular, Barker's relationship with the poet and novelist Elizabeth Smart ; it is, as such, a riposte to her account of their love in 'By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept'. Scarce with such attributes.
