Blunden, Edmund ~ De Bello Germanico : A Fragment of Trench History. Written in 1918 by the Author of Undertones of War : Signed and Numbered by the the Author

Hawstead: G. A. Blunden : 1930

The First UK printing published by Hawstead: G. A. Blunden in 1930. Original grey printed boards. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with the prelims a little toned and spotted in places. The cover edges have a hint of rubbing in places. The spine is intact and the printed label to the spine is complete. The attractive bookplate of Kenneth Rae (designed by Rex Whistler) has been affixed to the front pastedown. Kenneth Rae was one of the Directors at Cobden-Sanderson publishers. The latter had published the author’s classic title ‘Undertones of War’ in 1928. The bookplate was made by Whistler for Kenneth Rae in 1931, a year after this book was published. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. The total limitation was only 275 copies, of which 25 special copies were numbered and signed by the author. These special copies were printed on special paper and bound with a morocco spine and marbled paper covers. Interestingly, this particular copy has been both signed and numbered (number '3') by the author to the limitation page. However, the book dimensions and the way it has been bound appear to fit more with the trade edition format (Kirkpatrick A33a) and as such, I am unclear as to why it has been signed and numbered by the author. Despite this oddity, it is very extremely scarce to find this title appearing in commerce as a signed title. A very attractive copy of an important WW1 title.
