ENID BLYTON'S RARE FIRST BOOK
Blyton, Enid ~ Child Whispers
J. Saville & Co., UK : 1922
The First UK printing published by J. Saville & Co., UK in 1922. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Oblong 8vo. Issued in yellow card covers, with a pretty line illustration of a child surrounded by fairies. 24pp. Cover design by Blyton’s friend Phyllis Chase. A book of poetry for children, not dissimilar in style to those that would follow a few year's later from the pen of A.A. Milne. A very good copy indeed of this rare and fragile book. Light age related markings to the covers with a little creasing and light marking internally in a few places but unusually clean for its age. Small area of sticker abrasion to the front cover where the price ‘2/6 Net’ had been printed and two penned initials to the upper front cover edge. Working as a teacher Enid Blyton struggled to find poems of the type that really engaged her young pupils and thus set about writing some herself. "I have found the children delight in two distinct types of verses. These are the humorous type and the imaginative poetical type - the humour must be from a child's point of view and not from a 'grown-ups' - a very different thing. And the imagination in the second type of poem must be clear and whimsical, otherwise the appeal fails." First editions of this work are now most uncommon.
