During his time spent in Tangier, Bowles wrote extensively on the subject of North Africa, in particular with a focus on the foreign characters he met during his time in the continent. 'Too Far from Home' was one of his later pieces, which describes the life of Anita who, recently divorced, travels to a remote part of the Sahara in order to stay with her brother Tom. It is also about cultural isolation, and her struggles to fit in to the sparse and alien world she finds herself in. 'Too Far from Home' was written after a hiatus of some 25 after his previous novel, 'Up Above the World' had been published, though this can more accurately be described as a novella, running to just 93 pages, of which much is illustration. The text, however, is greatly enhanced by the artwork, provided by the American painter and photographer Marguerite McBey, which shows figures, camels, and various desert scenes in line. Scarce.
