The First Edition in the English Language with the Mervyn Peake Illustrations
Carroll, Lewis & Peake, Mervyn (Illus.) ~Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass
Zephyr books, Stockholm : 1946
First printed by Zephyr books, Stockholm in 1946. 'This edition not to be introduced into the British Empire or the U.S.A.’ The true first printing in the english language of this illustrated edition with the Mervyn Peake illustrations. The book and wrapper are in near Fine condition with the printed card wrappers as issued. Two penned previous owner’s names to the half-title and some light toning to the upper text-block, otherwise in lovely condition. A small nick and a small crease to the upper spine tip of the wrapper. A small piece of unnecessary reinforcement tape to the verso of the upper spine head and a very light stain to the lower spine tip. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Profusely illustrated throughout by Mervyn Peake and acknowledged to be one of the very few truly original interpretations of 'Alice' since Tenniel. Some of these illustrations were reduced in scale for the subsequent first UK edition published much later in 1954 by Alan Wingate, which omitted the final drawing of 'Dinah the kitten'. A very scarce title in its own right which rarely turns up in such collectible condition. Collectible.
