The Sole UK Printing published in association with The National Federation of Young Farmers' Clubs by Evans Brothers, Limited, London in 1953. 8vo., publisher's green boards, lettered in gilt to spine; in the unclipped publisher's blue wrapper, printed with tessellating farm images in brown; illustrated with pictures and diagrams in text throughout, all by Evelyn Dunbar; The BOOK with two small tape remnant marks to the upper board; lightly sunned at edges and bumped at spine tips; Very light residual tape marking to the endpapers; and some light toning and sporadic spotting, mostly to the outer-edge of the text block; still a very clean copy; The WRAPPER is in Very Good++ or better condition and rarely found as such, retaining almost all of its original brightness, with an overlaid price sticker of 10/6 net to the front flap, a closed tear to the front flap now expertly repaired internally with archival tissue; a couple of very tiny nicks; some tape residue marks visible to the verso only. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. First UK edition of this compendium of farm terms by Chapman, himself a charterer surveyor and land agent who had previously been employed on a large estate in Oxfordshire, as well as with the Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome and Washington. At the time of writing, Chapman was a senior lecturer in Agriculture at the College of Estate Management, and he had also written a series of books for children on the subject of the English countryside. This makes the tone of the present work, which was intended for the lay-person, as rather conversational in tone, and "for all those whose work and interests lie in the land". The text is greatly enhanced by the illustrative captioned drawings and diagrams, which have been provided by Evelyn Dunbar, the British artist and illustrator best known for recording the work of the Women's Land Army during the war. She was also commissioned for magazines such as Country Life, and other farming works including 'A Book of Farmcraft' by Michael Greenhill (1942), which was intended for those who had little prior knowledge of farming. A very elusive title in such condition.
