Chevallier, Gabriel ~ Clochemerle : With The Very Scarce John Austen Wrapper
Martin Secker & Warburg, London : 1936
The First UK printing published by Martin Secker and Warburg, London in 1936. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Some very light pushing at the spine ends. Gilt titling to the spine remains bright. Red top-stain partially faded but remains vibrant. Free from inscriptions. Light offsetting to the end-papers. Some light toning and spotting to the text-block. Internally clean. The fragile WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. A small loss to the upper front edge adjacent to the spine and a few small closed tears which have been neatly repaired with tape to the verso. Very light age related markings otherwise the scarce wrapper is in exceptional condition and the John Austen wrapper artwork is very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Front flap blurb : ' Cochemerle has achieved enormous popularity in France over the past two years, its sales approach a quarter of a million, and we now present it to English readers in a translation which does full justice to the original. . Here is a French 'Cranford' written as it were by an Anatole France or a modern Rabelais, a book to savour slowly if you are a connoisseur, to read with alacrity if you enjoy incident and characterisation.' It was also very successfully adapted in 1972 as a BBC television serialisation with Ray Galton and Alan Simpson adapting the text. Filmed on location in France, it starred Roy Dotrice, Wendy Hiller, Cyril Cusack, Kenneth Griffith, Cyd Hayman, Bernard Bresslaw et al. with narration by Peter Ustinov (Wiki). Extremely scarce as the first issue with no other copies available at present in e-commerce. Only the second copy we have handled.
