Chubb, Ralph ~ Eighteen Engravings Printed From The Original Woodblocks : Signed By Timothy D’Arch Smith

Palatine Press, London : 1972

Loose sheets laid into paper wrappers, printed in black and all housed in a blue buckram chemise which has gilt titling and a marbled interior - All as issued. The book label of Pamela and Raymond Lister (designed by Reynolds Stone) to the front pastedown of the chemise. All in fine condition. Twenty copies only were printed by the Common press, Salisbury on Gunters 'Ration' paper. Copies 2-20 were in black and copies 1-2 were in black and sanguine. This is number '8'. The limitation reads :'The woodcuts were reproduced by permission of Anthony Reid, owner of the Ralph Chubb copyrights, archives and Memorial Collection.' Underneath in pencil, is written ; '(Printed for Timothy D'Arch Smith)'. In the preface Timothy D'Arch Smith is mentioned and he has crossed through his name and signed in pen next to this strikethrough. The Palatine Press published few other books e.g. 'The Eye of Ganymede' by Brian Hill. The Press issued limited-edition fine press and Uranian-interest titles as well as editions connected to Ralph Chubb (whose woodblocks and materials Timothy d'Arch Smith collected and catalogued). Timothy D'Arch Smith is an English bibliophile, book dealer, and author born in 1936, known for specialising in rare occult literature. His key works being 'Love in Earnest' (1970), a study of English "Uranian" poets (poets writing on homoerotic themes), as well as bibliographies and memoirs on Montague Summers and the Fortune Press. Ralph Nicholas Chubb (1892 – 1960) was an English poet, printer and artist. Heavily influenced by Whitman, Blake, and the Romantics, his work was the creation of a highly intricate personal mythology, one that was anti-materialist and sexually revolutionary. None of the editions of Chubb's books exceed more than 200 copies, and some of his lithographed masterworks exist in only 30 or 40 copies, of which a mere six or seven are meticulously hand-coloured by Chubb. A handsomely produced edition and uncommon not least in part due to the small limitation.
