Cobden-Sanderson, T. J ~ Credo : Presentation Copy Signed By The Author
The Doves Press, London : 1907
The First issue printed by The Doves Press, London in 1907. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with the original publisher's binding of full niger goatskin, upper board tooled with gilt title and a circular wreath of arrow leaves and dots. 'The Doves Bindery 19 C-S 08' to the lower rear turn-in. All edges gilt, with a little light marking to the boards, light sunning to the spine and slight rubbing to the extremities. Minor spotting and offsetting from the turn-ins to the peripheral leaves. The author's presentation copy, inscribed and signed by the author to the front blank end-paper : 'To Nannie, with much affection, C. S. 18 August 1908'. One of a very few copies printed for presentation to friends. Cobden-Sanderson printed it in 1907 for publication the following year and destroyed all the remaining copies of this first issue, even his own. This work appears in Ransom and Tomkinson with the date of 1909, with a limitation of 250 copies on paper and 12 on vellum. This copy, dated 1907, carries no printed limitation but the text is dated 1906 (when he printed a broadside). The colophon is dated 1907. Tidcombe notes that Cobden-Sanderson’s bindings on the paper copies of 1908 bear simply the title, without the circular ornamental wreath [Tidcombe DPE 89]. One of the 'few copies, presented to friends of the writer' that Cobden-Sanderson mentions in the prospectus for the regular edition. The Tidcombe bibliography records only three other copies which along with the one or two others that have passed through the trade, make it seem likely that the limitation was of the later issue printed on vellum, perhaps only a dozen [Tidcombe DPE 89].
