The author's key title

Cronin, A.J. ~ The Citadel

Victor Gollancz, London : 1937

The First UK printing published by Victor Gollancz, London in 1937. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with just a little pushing at the spine tips. Original publisher's black boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Tiny bumps to the lower corners with a tiny split to the rear lower spine fold. Light toning and dustiness to the text-block with a hint of spotting. Free from inscriptions. Small neat 'Foyles' bookshop label to the front lower pastedown. The WRAPPER is in Very Good++ or better condition. Correctly priced '8/6 net' to the spine as called for. Light edge-wear with a small loss to the lower front flap fold. Very light toning and fading to the spine and edges. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. 'The Citadel' was ground-breaking in its treatment of the contentious theme of medical ethics. It has been credited with laying the foundation in Britain for the introduction of the NHS a decade later. The novel was based upon the author's own experiences whilst practising medicine in the coal-mining communities of South Wales. In the USA, it won the 'National Book Award' for 1937 voted by members of the American Booksellers Association. It has been adapted into several successful film, radio, and television productions around the world, including the Oscar-nominated 1938 film starring Ralph Donat, Rosalind Russell, Ralph Richardson, and Rex Harrison. Cronin once stated in an interview, 'I have written in 'The Citadel' all I feel about the medical profession, its injustices, its hide-bound unscientific stubbornness, its humbug . The horrors and inequities detailed in the story I have personally witnessed. This is not an attack against individuals, but against a system'. A sharp copy and now very elusive with the wrapper. The nicest copy we have handled to date.
