FIRST UK PRINTING. Ghyllside Press, Kendal: 2021.
8vo., half blue/grey cloth over decorated paste paper boards, printed label to spine; decorative linocut endpapers; containing numerous ink and wash drawings, maps and full colour linocuts by the author (one double-page centrefold); printed on a series of different papers; THE BOOK fine. LIMITED EDITION, one of just 75 hand signed and numbered copies, this copy no. 25, with text hand set in Perpetua and cuts printed from the original wood & lino blocks. This copy comes together with the original prospectus/promotional material, loosely enclosed in a mylar sleeve. A wonderful collection of linocuts by John Davies, hand printed by him alongside the Stramongate Press, who here provide a map as well as ink and wash drawings. A description, alongside the cuts, incorporates a series of extracts from histories, topographies and travelogues, mostly taken from the library in Kendal. Together, the book provides a beautiful personal reflection on the rural churches in Cumbria, divided into areas by way of South, West, East and North, with the additional prospectus providing loose copies of some of the contained illustrations. "Having begun work on this book in 2003...I find it quite ironic that it has eventually been completed only a short time before Cumbria will cease to exist", Davies writes in a quote to the prospectus. "...the administrative boundaries [will] return to a line that would have been familar to the Normans when they arrived in 1066". Fine.
