De Croze, Austin ~ What to Eat and Drink in France. A Guide to the Characteristic Recipes & Wines of Each French Province, with a Glossary of Culinary Terms and a Full Index

Frederick Warne & Co., London : 1931

The First UK printing published by Frederick Warne & Co., London in 1931. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. A little light pushing at the spine ends and corners. The blue embossed titling and decorations to the front board and spine remains vibrant. Moderate toning and spotting to the text-block due to the quality of the paper stock used. Light offsetting to the map end-papers with some spotting to the prelims, otherwise internally clean. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. Some light rubbing and fading to the spine ends. toning to the spine and folds. Light edge-wear with some tape reinforcement to the spine ends and upper corners to the verso. The wrapper artwork by 'MHBJ' remains striking in the removable Brodart archival over. ''What to Eat and Drink in France', has been written primarily for the use of visitors to France, to enable them to choose the typical local dishes and wines that are most characteristic of each Province. What is also hoped is that it will prove valuable to all interested in the culinary art. Never before attempted in a work of this description. The author has not given actual recipes, but the ingredients and characteristics of dishes, sweets, confectionery, and beverages - information that is too often unknown to waiters and butlers in the best of restaurants'. The author writing in 1931 states: ' it may at times be found that some of the most characteristic recipes are not included in the menus of restaurants. They has been a tendency in recent years to forget these delightful old dishes, but they are still the best, and the tourist who, instructed by this book, asks of the dishes of his own selection, will not only ensure delight for himself, but will bring back to the French restaurant tour the realisation that in her wonderful old recipes France has a treasure that she should jealously preserve. .' (Notes are partially taken from the preface and introduction). An increasingly elusive title.
