The First UK printing published by Gollancz, London in 1957. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Light pushing at the spine ends and the lower corners. Gilt titling remains bright. Toning to the text-block. Free from inscriptions. Small bookseller sticker to the lower front pastedown. The armorial bookplate of the noted bibliophile 'Comstock' to the front upper pastedown. The bookplate has been signed (without dedication) by Daphne Du Maurier. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Light toning to the spine. A 3cm closed tear to the upper front spine fold and to the rear upper edge. A smaller closed tear to the rear upper spine fold. Some light age related markings but far less than usually encountered. The wrapper presents very well in the removable Brodart archival cover. Du Maurier was rather fond of the novel in question, stating in a letter to a Ms. Hart 'I personally think 'The Scapegoat' is more unusual than either 'Rebecca' or 'Frenchman's Creek' '. Basis for two screen adaptations, firstly starring Alec Guinness (1959) and more recently starring Matthew Rhys (2012). Collectible.
