Garner, Alan : The Owl Service : Signed By The Author In The Year Of Publication : Carnegie Medal Winner
Collins, London : 1967
The First UK printing published by Collins, London in 1967. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just a hint of pushing at the spine tips and some mild spotting to the text-block. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. Correctly priced at '15s. net' to the lower front flap. Light toning to the spine, folds and rear panel edges. A small nick with associated creasing to the upper front edge but barely discernible. The Kenneth Farnhill wrapper artwork is striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been signed (without dedication) and dated (21 June 1967) by the author in the year of publication in the author’s characteristic calligraphic handwriting. Garner's classic fantasy was awarded both the ‘Carnegie Medal’ and the ‘Guardian Prize’. ‘Only six books have won both awards in the 45 years from 1966 to 2011. Set in modern Wales, it is an adaptation of the story of the mythical Welsh woman Blodeuwedd, an ‘expression of the myth’ in the author's words. It was named one of the top ten Medal-winning works for the 70th anniversary celebration in 2007, selected by a panel to compose the ballot for a public election of the all-time favourite’ (Wiki). Signed titles by this author are very scarce.
