Garner, Alan ~ Thursbitch : Signed By The Author

The First UK Printing : The Harvill Press, London : 2003

The First UK Printing published by The Harvill Press, London in 2003. 8vo., black boards lettered in gilt to spine with publisher’s device to foot; with publisher’s unclipped wrapper (£14.99) featuring a cover photograph by Errol Forbes, and a black and white portrait of the author to the rear flap; The BOOK is in Fine condition in like WRAPPER. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. First edition, with full number line 1-10. Signed (without dedication) by the author to the title page. Mostly known for his Children’s fantasy books, Thursbitch was the Carnegie Prize winning author's seventh published novel, with the title taken directly from the valley in the Pennines of the same name. Drawing on the life of the real John Turner, whose stone can be found there with the inscription : 'HERE JOHN TURNER WAS CAST AWAY IN A HEAVY SNOWSTORM IN THE NIGHT IN OR ABOUT THE YEAR 1755 '. And on the other side : 'THE PRINT OF A WOMAN'S SHOE WAS FOUND BY HIS SIDE WERE HE LAY DEAD'. Garner weaves a mystery story set between the 18th century and the present day. Catherine Lockerbie for the Scotsman writes that “There is more meaning and worth in a single paragraph of Alan Garner than in much of the pale, thin stuff that passes for contemporary English fiction”. Very elusive as the first issue signed.
