Grahame, Kenneth & Shepard, E.H. (Illus.) ~ Wind In The Willows
Methuen, London : 1931
The Thirty-Eighth UK printing of this title and the First UK printing to be published with the illustrations by E.H. Shepard by Methuen and Co., London in 1931. The BOOK is in near Fine condition and appears unread. The publisher's original green cloth, with the gilt decoration of Mole, Rat, and Mr Toad to the front board and gilt titles to the spine. The top-stain green is unfaded. A hint of pushing at the extreme spine tips and the very slightest of spotting to the text-block. The map endpapers designed by Shephard are clean. Free from inscriptions, erasures and bookplates. The very scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. A hint of edge-wear to the extreme spine tips with no toning to the spine. With only very light light spotting and age related markings, the wrapper is in exceptional condition for its age. The front cover panels shows the three protagonists next to a caravan, a portrait of Rat to the spine, and a bank-side scene to the rear cover. The wrapper looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Both the book and the wrapper have not undergone any restoration or repairs with the book having been in private ownership for many years. 'Shepard's beautiful illustrations are the perfect companion for Grahame's elegant prose, and this combination does much to explain the enduring attraction of this story' (Book Collector No.271, 'The Great Illustrators'). Increasingly elusive to find in such collectible condition.
