Green, Henry ~ Living
J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd, London : 1929
The First UK printing published by J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd, London in 1929. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Slight pushing and fading at the spine tips matching loss to the wrapper. Free from inscriptions. A hint of spotting to the prelims. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Light toning to the spine and lightly spotted, more-so to the rear panel. A light vertical crease to the spine. Some small losses at the upper spine end. Corners lightly rubbed and some light edge-wear. The wrapper artwork by Kenneth Romney Towndrow is striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Green's second novel, centred around 'a family business. An engineering works in Birmingham which a young man takes over from his dying father. But, despite the delicious satire on his position and love affairs, the book is really about skilled craftsmen, foremen and works managers in a phase of industrial depression' (Connolly, The Modern Movement 59). The book is notable for its deliberate lack of conjunctives, in order to reflect a proper Birmingham accent. A cornerstone work of modernist literature and very uncommon in the wrapper.
