Another collaboration between Ambrose Heath (one of the best-regarded food writers of his day) and Edward Bawden, the celebrated illustrator who would later go on to be a renowned war artist. Heath wrote prolifically on the subject of food throughout the 20th century, and many of his books were illustrated by Bawden with the bold and often humorous illustrations for which he is perhaps best known today. Here, a whole menagerie of soups are described, from thin to thick, fish to meat to vegetables, hot and cold, as well as crémes, consommés, potages, pureés and veloutés. Despite the diversity, Heath was keen to provide recipes which would suit any household budget, with most ingredients readily available at the time of publication.
