HIGHSMITH, Patricia ~ The Man Who Wrote Books in his Head and Other Stories. Signed by the author.
LIMITED EDITION. Eurographica, Helsinki: 1986.
8vo., plain white card wraps with burgundy dustwrapper, printed in black; outer edges untrimmed; THE BOOK fine; THE WRAPPER fine. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Limited edition, this copy no. 331 of just 350 copies printed on Michelangelo paper, signed by the author in black ink to the title page, and dated 30 Sept. 1985. The fourth volume in the 'Mystery and Spy Authors' series, which was preceded by 'The Modern Crime Story' by Julian Symons; 'No Comebacks' by Frederick Forsyth; and 'The Interview' by Ed McBain. Here, Highsmith contributes four stories which had previously appeared in 'Slowly, Slowly in the Wind', adding 'Something You Have to Live With'; 'Slowly, Slowly in the Wind' and 'A Curious Suicide' to the title tale. In a similar vein to her best selling 'Ripley' novels, Highsmith portrays a series of gruesome and rather macabre short stories (in one describing the best method to dispose of a dead body), and in 'A Curious Suicide' focusing, like Tom Ripley, on a murderer who gets away with his crime. The title story, however, is very different in scope, and concerns the powers - and sometimes limitations - of the imagination of a writer.
