A handsome production

Hughes, Ted & Baskin, Leonard (Illus.) ~ A Primer Of Birds : One Of The 25 Deluxe Copies With An Extra Suite Of Signed Plates

Gehenna Press, Lurley, UK : 1981 : Sole UK Printing

The sole UK printing published by Gehenna Press, Lurley, UK in 1981. Limited to 250 copies, of which this is number 'X1' of only 25 deluxe numbered copies signed by the author and illustrator, containing an additional suite of the etchings at the rear, and bound in quarter green morocco over marbled paper-covered boards. The BOOK is in Fine condition. The five striking monochrome woodcuts created by Baskin are printed from the blocks on Dover handmade paper from Maidstone, Kent. A sixth coloured woodcut follows the text before the colophon. Title page printed in red and black. The final woodcut is on the colophon. The extra suite of woodcuts bound to the rear are printed on Japanese Paper and are all signed and numbered ('X1/XXV') by Leonard Baskin. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. Baskin set up The Gehenna Press while still a student at Harvard in 1942. Over the next 60 years, the Press went on to produce over 200 books. The Baskin family moved to Lurley in Devon in 1974. After a few years, Baskin bought a new press and 'The Primer of Birds' was the first Gehenna Press title produced in England. A very elusive copy of one of the most handsome books that Hughes and Baskin worked on together. Collectible.
