A FINE COPY, SIGNED BY CHRIS RIDDELL.

HUGHES, Ted; Chris RIDDELL [Illus.] ~ Ffangs the Vampire Bat and the Kiss of Truth. Signed by the illustrator.

FIRST UK PRINTING. Faber and Faber, London: 1986.

Large 8vo., black boards, lettered in silver to spine with publisher's device to foot; together in the unclipped pictorial dustwrapper (£5.95 net to front flap) designed by Chris Riddell and showing a sad-looking vampire against a red cushioned backdrop; with a terrified crowd to the lower panel; illustrated throughout with wonderfully enigmatic drawings by the same; THE BOOK fine; THE WRAPPER similarly fine, just one tiny dark mark to head of spine. The wrapper is protected in a removable brodart archival cover. First UK edition. This copy boldly signed by the illustrator in black ink to the title page. The wonderful story of Ffangs, a misunderstood vampire who lives with his family on vampire island, but cannot stand the sight of blood and simply wants to be human. Soon he finds himself in Buckingham Palace, and must face Thomas Squarg the Vampire Hunter alone. The English poet Ted Hughes wrote extensively for children, but is perhaps best known today for his 1968 science fiction novel 'Iron Man'. The South African-born illustrator Chris Riddell has won three Kate Greenaway Medals over his long career, as well as three Nestlé Smarties Book Prizes. On 9 June 2015, he was appointed the UK Children's Laureate. His wonderful illustrations are the perfect pairing for this inventive, fantastical work, and are widely surreal in their depictions of the titular character and a host of others traipsing around London, flying through the air in Helicopters, and encountering characters as wide and diverse as witches, giants, and beauty queens. A lovely copy.
