Jones, David ~ In Parenthesis : Seinnyessit E Gledyf Ym Penn Mameu

Faber and Faber, London : 1937

The First UK printing published by Faber & Faber, London in 1937. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Original beige cloth, title gilt to spine on a grey ground. Covers are clean with only a hint of spotting to the endpapers. Grey top-stain remains bright. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition with just a hint of toning to the spine. Very light edge-wear with a just a few tiny chips to the extreme upper spine tip. The white rear panel is remarkably clean for its age with only very light age related markings. A small very faint red pencil mark to the front panel. The red and yellow lettering to the spine remains very bright. The wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Two illustrated plates (one as frontispiece) after etchings by Jones, and a map plate, each with original tissue guards present. David Jones's epic poetic memoir, tackling the trauma of his trench experiences in the First World War after his breakdown from shell-shock in 1932. Described on the wrapper as 'not a 'war book' so much as a distillation of the essence of war books, and in particular it is the chanson de gestes of the Cockney and the Welsh and the Welsh Cockney in the Great War, men and ghosts, and behind them the shadows of all their ancestors who fought and toiled and died in the Britain of the Celt and of the Saxon'.........'one of the most exciting books that we have published'. 'In Parenthesis' won 'The Hawthornden Prize" and the praise of such writers as W. H. Auden and T. S. Eliot, who declared it as 'a work of genius' in the preface to his 1961 Faber re-issue. A very sharp copy and certainly the nicest copy that we have handled to date.
