LATHAM, [Walter] Reg.[inald] & SPRADBERY, Walter E. ~ Verses and Cuts.
FIRST UK PRINTING. Published by the authors at the Walthamstow Settlement: [c. 1930].
Large 8vo., blue and orange printed and sewn boards, together in the rare original glassine wrapper; containing 11 woodcuts in black throughout; THE BOOK near-fine, just a couple of very small scuffs to edges and two tiny damp splashes to front board; a couple of very minor spots to endpapers; THE WRAPPER, seldom found at all, with some chips and short closed tears to edges. The sleeve is protected in a removable mylar cover. FIRST UK EDITION, in the original glassine sleeve. A collection of beautiful verses, self-published by Walter Reginald Latham, and his first collection of poetry. Known as 'Reg' to his family, Latham went on to write considerably more poetry during the Second World War, and he was at one point tipped to be 'The next Edward Lear', although this never truly came to fruition. The verses are beautifully offset by eleven linocuts by the prolific designer, painter and poet Walter E. Spradbery, who later worked closely with London Transport on a series of posters over a period of three decades. Here, the illustrations show birds, cottages and countryside scenes, as well as nods to the floral subjects for which he would later become known.
