The First UK printing published by Faber & Faber, London in 1940. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. Original publisher's boards are lightly bumped at the spine tips and at some of the corners. The board edges are lightly spotted. Internally light spotting and offsetting to the blank end-papers. Free from inscriptions. The scarce WRAPPER is neatly price-clipped and in Very Good+ condition. Some creasing rubbing to the edges and folds. A little loss at the spine ends and corners. A small area of loss to the upper edge of the rear panel. Some age related markings in places, a few small closed tears and some slight darkening to the upper edges of the flaps and rear panel. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. There are 4 colour plates and numerous half tone illustrations. Considered to be one of the most influential books on craft pottery in the UK and USA in the 20th Century. It is the first treatise by a potter on the workshop traditions handed down by Koreans and Japanese from the greatest period of Chinese ceramics in the Sung Dynasty. Regarded as the 'Father of British Studio Pottery', Bernard Leach saw pottery as a combination of art, philosophy, design and craft; The Potter's Book defined his craft philosophy and techniques, and was the breakthrough to his recognition. The introduction is by Soyetsu Yanagi and Michael Cardew. The first issue is scarce in any condition and this more-so with the elusive wrapper.
