LEAVIS, F. R. ~ Mass Civilisation and Minority Culture.
FIRST UK PRINTING. The Minority Press at Cambridge: 1930.
8vo., integrated sewn grey paper wraps, printed with text and designs in green to both covers and flaps; THE BOOK with the covers a little toned to the edges, else near-fine. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival sleeve. FIRST UK EDITION. No. 1 in the 'Minority Pamphlets' series, priced one shilling and sixpence net to the front flap. The first publication by the 'The Minority Press', which was founded in 1930 by Gordon Fraser, an undergraduate student of Leavis. This first publication was this, Leavis' manifesto, in which he argued that industrialisation and mass media were destroying traditional high culture, resulting in a 'levelling down' of taste. The press, which was in essence the book publishing arm of the Leavis camp of literary criticism, published just five more publications, mostly by Cambridge students, before closing down in 1933. Scarce.
