The First UK printing published by Chatto & Windus, London in 1949. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Light pushing to the spine ends with some slight spotting to the text-block. Internally clean apart from some light offsetting to the blank end-papers. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Some light edge-wear at the corners, with some mild rubbing and age related markings in places. Some light fading and toning to the spine. The Edward Bawden wraparound wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. This selection of prose and verse is profusely illustrated in B/W by Edward Bawden throughout. This copy has come from the personal library of Edward Bawden - The book has been signed (without dedication) in ink by him to the front blank end-paper and also bears his personal bookplate to the front pastedown. Scarce with such attributes
