The First UK printing published by Longmans, Green & Co. Ltd., London in 1938. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Pink top-stain very slightly faded and spotted. Light pushing at the spine ends. A neat previous owner's penned name and date to the front blank end-paper. A small bookseller sticker to the lower front blank end-paper. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good + condition. Moderate edge-wear with some rubbing, creasing to the edges and some loss to the spine ends. Some small closed tears to the spine folds. Some splitting to the spine folds with tape reinforcement to the verso. A 8cm closed tear to the lower front flap fold. Toning and fading to the spine with a small stain to the lower front cover edge. The Nancy Sharp wrapper artwork remains very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. Eight B/W drawings by Nancy Sharp, including the well-known charcoal portrait as the frontispiece. Sharp 'attended the Slade School of Art from 1928 to 1931. At the Slade she met and married her first husband, William Coldstream. ......In the late 1930s she had an affair with Louis MacNeice, illustrating two of his books and partially inspiring Autumn Journal (Wiki). The first appearance of the poems 'Leaving Barra' and 'Bagpipe Music'. Scarce with the wrapper.
