The sole printing published by Southern Railway of England in 1935. 12mo., original stapled paper-covered covers with 'Royal Jubilee 1935' label in red and a tessellating image in blue and white; with title vignette and three striking chapter-head wood engravings by Eric Ravilious; as well as a folding map of the South of England railway network printed in blue and white; and an unused invitation inviting the reader to "any information points of interest, cheap travel facilities, or the arranging of a circular tour...fill in your name and address... and hand it to the ticket collector..."; The BOOK with a little marginal browning to spine and edges; as well as light even toning of the text block; a couple of very tiny dark scratches to the lower cover and couple of small marks to the front panel. The book is protected in a removable Secol archival sleeve. The sole UK edition. Three short essays, compiled by Southern Railway of England for the Royal Jubilee and printed at The Curwen Press, which provide a guide for visiting tourists. The first, entitled 'The Beauty of Southern England', speaks of the chalk cliffs of Dover, the apple orchards of Kent, the South Downs and numerous other Literary connections by Mais, who was famous for his travel guides; the second, 'Social and Sporting Season', discusses Goodwood, cricket at the Oval and Lords, as well as other pastimes such as dances, fishing and bathing by the journalist Charles Graves (brother of Robert); and the final essay 'The Birthplace of English History' gives a run-down of Britain from the stone age to the 19th century, via the Battle of Hastings and Stonehenge. A lovely example with the woodcuts by Ravilious; a very scarce ephemeral item, rarely found complete in such collectible condition.
