Marlowe, Christopher & Hughes-Stanton, Blair (Illus.) ~ The Tragicall History Of Doctor Faustus : In The Publisher’s Original Binding
The Golden Hours Press, London : 1932
The First UK printing of this illustrated edition published by the Golden Hours Press, London in 1932. Number '15' of 250 copies issued with only 200 copies being for sale. The BOOK is in Very Good- condition. In the publisher's original marbled boards and morocco spine. The latter is lightly faded but the gilt titling remains bright. Slight fading to the board edges. Upper edge gilt and others uncut with some toning to the fore-edge . Internally, some spotting to the prelims and page edges. Some damp-staining to the lower corner which is present on the majority of pages. Penned number '15c' to the front blank end-paper but otherwise free from inscriptions. This is the original edition printed and bound for The Golden Hours Press. It did not sell well on publication and many copies were left unbound. The unbound copies were subsequently bought by Hollis & Carter, who published the remaining copies in a plainer green buckram binding, with an errata slip and revised numbering including the letter 'a' to indicate it was a later edition. A frontispiece and 3 full-page and 1 half-page wood-engravings by Blair Hughes-Stanton. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. Very scarce in the publisher's original binding.
