Born in Georgia in 1917, she was encouraged to write from a young age by her father, and published her first work, an autobiographical piece entitled "Wunderkind", in 1936. Afer marrying an inspiring writer, Reeves McCullers, the pair took turns to write while the other worked, although Carson's literary success ultimately eclipsed her husband's. 'The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter' was the first novel she completed, and is a Southern Gothic novel centring on a mute man named John Singer. At the time of publication, it was considered by many to contain subtle commentary on social conflict, as well as being a parable about fascism. McCullers was just 23 at the time of its release. The book was an instant bestseller, and was the first in a long line of novels concerning the rejected, forgotten, mistreated or oppressed. The film adaptation, made in 1968, starred Alan Arkin, Sondra Locke and Cicely Tyson in the lead roles. Scarce in the wrapper.
