London - William Heinemann; New York - Doubleday Place & Co. : c1921
The First UK printing published by London - William Heinemann; New York - Doubleday Place & Co. in c1921 (Nd). Limited edition, number '547' of 550 copies, signed by the illustrator to the limitation page. The BOOK is in exceptional Fine condition and appears unread (many pages remain uncut). The publisher's quarter vellum is very clean with very minimal spotting. The gilt lettering to the spine and upper cover, and the gilt device to upper cover remain very bright. Top edge gilt, blue pictorial endpapers. 24 tipped in striking colour plates by Arthur Rackham, including frontispiece, captioned tissue guards, headpieces, tailpieces and full-page black and white illustrations also by Rackham throughout, A very attractive limited edition of John Milton's Comus, which is a masque in honour of chastity, first presented on Michaelmas in 1634 before John Egerton, 1st Earl of Bridgewater, at Ludlow Castle in celebration of the Earl's new post as Lord President of Wales. The book has been well protected by having been covered in a plain glassine wrapper ( I am unsure as to whether it was issued with one) and stored away for the last 20 years. As nice a copy as you are likely to find. One of Arthur Rackham's highlight titles.
