Osborne, John ~ The Entertainer ( With A Letter Signed By The Author)

Faber : 1957

The First UK Printing published by Faber in 1957. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Light offsetting to the endpapers and a little toning to the text-block. Free from inscriptions, markings and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. A hint of toning to the lettering on the spine. The photographic wrapper (depicting Laurence Olivier in the title role taken by Tony Armstrong Jones) looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. Accompanied by a loose 2 page hand written letter from the author, signed and dated in 1991. The author refers in the letter his thinking on who the lead character of Archie Rice was based on: '..some people have suggested to me that I modelled Archie Rice on Max Miller. This is not so. Archie was a man. Max was a God, a saloon-bar PRIAPUS.' Osborne goes on to explore the differences between Miller and the character Archie. A wonderful insight into the character of Archie. Scarce with such attributes.
