Pound, Ezra ~ Selected Poems : Edited With An Introduction by T.S. Eliot : With The Scarce Wrapper
Faber & Gwyer, London : 1928
The First UK printing of the first trade edition, published by Faber & Gwyer, London in 1928. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition with just some light pushing to the spine ends and a little toning to the text-block. Light offsetting to the blank end-papers. Penned name of 'Geoffrey Tillotson', May 1932' to the front blank end-paper. Tillotson was formerly professor of English at Birkbeck College, London and a fellow of the British Academy. His penned and pencilled annotations are present to the front pastedown, rear end paper and also to the page margins in the chapters 'Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (life and contacts) and 'The Introduction by T.S. Eliot'. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good- condition. It has archival tape repairs to the verso to the spine folds as the panels have become detached from the spine. Some losses at the upper spine end, the middle of the spine and the rear upper edge. Some splitting to the folds. Toned to the spine with a lightly penned scribble to the front panel. Despite these issues, the wrapper comes together and presents well in the removable Brodart archival cover. This edition is edited with a 19 page Introduction by T. S. Eliot. This selection also includes 'Personae of Ezra Pound', 'Ripostes', 'Lustra', 'Cathay', 'H. S. Mauberley', and other early poems rejected by the author and omitted from his collected edition. Quote taken from T. S. Eliot's Introduction : 'Mr. Ezra Pound recently made for publication in New York a volume of 'collected poems' under the title of 'Personae' I made a few suggestions for omissions and inclusions in a similar collection to be published in London; and out of discussions of such matters with Pound arose the spectre of an introduction by myself. The poems which I wished to include, from among those which the author had omitted, are found together at the back of the book. The order followed throughout the book is, with the exception mentioned, that of original publication of the scattered volumes from which the poems are drawn.' Scarce with the wrapper. Gallup A30a: 'Published 23 November 1928 at 7s. 6d.; 1000 copies printed'. The signed edition of 100 copies (A30b) was published on 10 December. Vey scarce with the wrapper.
