Rae, Gwynedd ~ Mary Plain In Wartime

George Routledge and Sons Ltd., London : 1942

The First UK printing published by George Routledge and Sons Ltd., London in 1942. Hard back binding in publisher's original turquoise cloth covered boards, black titling to the spine and to the front cover. 8vo. 7½'' x 5¼''. Contains 125 pp with monochrome text illustrations throughout by Irene Williamson. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. The book has a moderate lean and there is some light spotting to the prelims. A tiny rub to the lower edge of the front board. Light toning to the text-block with the occasional light spot to the extreme page edges in places. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. Some small losses to the spine end. Some fading and toning to the spine. Some fading of colouring to the edges and the rear panel. Some splitting along the spine folds with a neat tape repair to the upper spine to the verso. The wonderful front panel artwork remains striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. A cheap wartime production and a scarce survivor. The sixth title in the acclaimed 'Mary Plain' bear books. The 'Mary Plain' series is a set of 14 classic British children's novels all written by Gwynedd Rae. It follows the adventures of a cheeky, endearing bear cub from the bear pits at Berne Zoo named Mary Plain. The first book was published in 1930 and the final original title in 1965. This title is one of the scarcest of the series to find with the wrapper. A charming production.
