The BOOK is in near Fine condition. pp. [45], 8vo, original orange buckram-backed pale grey boards, backstrip gilt-lettered, a very slight undulation at upper edge of the rear board. 12 wood-engravings and by Ravilious, who also designed the red Zodiac-sign title-page border. The pencil ownership inscription of Harold Child to the front end-paper. A small very faint stain on one of the preface's leaves, otherwise clean internally, A sharp copy and unusual to find as clean as this internally. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover. Twelve highly detailed Ravilious engravings, embodying the mysterious qualities of the Zodiac symbols set in quintessentially English landscape and domestic settings. Ravilious sets out the challenges he faced in the 4-page preface, and his admiration of the early astronomers’ ability to conjure creatures and figures from abstract arrangements of stars. This, the copy of Harold Child, editor and writer for the Curwen Press, with which Ravilious was deeply associated.
