ONE OF THE AUTHOR'S MOST CONTROVERSIAL AND ENDURING WORKS, SIGNED.
RUSHDIE, Salman ~ The Satanic Verses. With signed bookplate.
FIRST UK PRINTING. Viking, London: 1988.
Large thick 8vo., publisher's navy blue boards, backstrip lettered in gilt with Viking device to foot; in the instantly recognisable printed dustwrapper featuring a vignette taken from 'Rustam Killing the White Demon' (courtesy of the V&A museum); THE BOOK excellent, perhaps a little even toning to the text block but otherwise fine; THE WRAPPER very near fine, unfaded to the backstrip (as often happens), with ever-so-slight rubbing to spine tips. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. FIRST UK EDITION, with full number line 1-10. This copy signed by way of a pasted-in bookplate to the ffep. The bookplate was provided by the Oak Tree Press, a company whom Rushdie worked closely with and contributed a number of signed bookplates to assist their efforts (and thus with provenance guaranteed). A Booker Prize bookmark is also loosely inserted - The Satanic Verses was shortlisted in the year of publication, narrowly losing to Peter Carey's 'Oscar and Lucinda'.
