First UK Printing : Stanley Nott, London : 1935
The First UK Printing published by Stanley Nott, London in 1935. 8vo., oatmeal-coloured cloth, lettered in black to the spine; in the plain printed wrapper (5s net to the front flap); The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition with a very slight shelf-lean, slight bumping and discolouring to the spine, and light spotting mostly affecting the outer edges of the text block and prelims; The WRAPPER is in excellent near Fine condition, with just a little darkening to the spine and folds, and some light scattered spots. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. First UK edition of this comparative work by the Anglo-French scholar, writer, and broadcaster Denis Saurat (21 March 1890 – 7 June 1958). It was only his second published work, following 'Milton: Man and Thinker', which was first published in French in 1920 and in English in 1925. His views on Blake and Milton in particular were particularly groundbreaking at the time for their comparison with the early modern period, and even the occult. Here, he considers the two writers within the framework of Religious and Political Liberty, Morality, and Metaphysical ideas including Pantheism. Very scarce.
