Shelley, Percy Bysshe ~ Poetical Pieces. Containing ‘Prometheus Unbound’, ‘Hellas’, ‘The Cenci’ , ‘Rosalind and Helen’
C. and J. Ollier: and W. Simpkin and R. Marshall, London : 1823
First Edition thus but the First UK printing by C. and J. Ollier and W. Simpkin and R, Marshall, London in 1823 of this posthumous gathering of the unsold first editions of 'Prometheus Unbound' (1820), 'Hellas' (1822), and 'Rosalind and Helen' (1819) and the second (but first London) edition of 'The Cenci' (1821), with other poems, all bound under a new general title-page (With the 'Prometheus' title wrongly titled 'Prometheus Unmasked'). The half-title for 'Prometheus Unbound' is present but absent for the other titles. The BOOK is in Very Good condition with contemporary green half calf binding, five raised bands, gilt titling and decorations. Marbled endpapers and marbled text-bock edges, the latter faded. Sunning and rubbing to the spine but the gilt remains fairly bright. Rubbing to the folds, edges and corners with some early cracking of the hinges but the binding remains tight. The spine may have been professionally rebacked at some time. Internally free from inscriptions and bookplates. Some toning to the page edges with occasional spotting throughout which is more marked in places. Wise comments on the book's rarity: 'During recent years nearly every available copy has been broken up....and the three first editions have been separately bound. Thus it seldom occurs today' (Wise, A Shelley Library, p. 69). A scarce survivor with COPAC only listing 4 copies and and we can only trace three copies at auction since 1981.
CONDITION: Very Good
