An extremely scarce title to find with the first issue wrapper
Shute, Nevil ~ Pied Piper : With The Scarce Wrapper
Heinemann, London : 1942
The First UK printing published by Heinemann, London in 1942. A very presentable copy of this scarce title. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition. An ink gift inscription dated February 1942 on the front free endpaper. Some very light spotting to a few pages, including title. Publisher's original cloth with the spine ends and corner tips slightly bumped and rubbed ; spotting to edges. The very elusive WRAPPER is neatly price-clipped, a few tears and creasing to the joints and extremities, with small losses to the spine ends and corner tips. The spine is fractionally faded with some neat tape reinforcements to verso. Extremely scarce with the George Mansell wrapper, which is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Only one copy has appeared at auction with its wrapper in the last 40 years and presently, I can locate no other such copies for sale in commerce. George Mansell (1915–1964) was a British designer, illustrator, and educator particularly active during the mid-20th century. He is perhaps best remembered for his influence on the next generation of graphic artists as a teacher. Mansell was a significant figure at St. Martin's School of Art in London. He served as a mentor to several notable students, including the acclaimed illustrator Fritz Wegner, who flourished under Mansell's guidance in drawing and lettering (AI mode). Collectible.
