Based on his earlier 1991 radio play 'In the Native State', 'Indian Ink' was first performed at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford, and subsequently opened at the Aldwych Theatre, London, on February 27, 1995. The plot follows protagonist Flora Crewe, a young poet who travels to India in the 1930s for her health. There, she has her portrait painted by a local artist, Nirad, and passes away shortly afterwards. Stoppard then shifts the time period to almost fifty years later, when two men visit Flora's sister in London - a would-be biographer, Eldon Pike, who she sends on a wild goose chase through India, and the artist's son, Anish, who learns more about Flora's relationship with his father. Covering a pinnacle period of Indian history, the play received mix reviews, but Indian theatre critic Gopal Gandhi nonetheless wrote in The Independent that it had "bitter-sweet topping to enjoy, for the sadness it evoked, for the regrets it reminded me of". An exceptionally clean and bright example. (Warner A15 a).
