The First UK Printing published by Rider in 1951. The BOOK is in near Fine Condition. A little pushing at the spine ends. Mild offsetting to the end papers. Light toning to the text block with a few small darker marks to the lower text-block. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The fragile paper WRAPPER is price-clipped and is in Very Good+ condition. Edge-wear with a little loss at the upper front fold and spine head. Nicks and closed tears to the rear cover and upper spine and lower rear spine fold. Two small rubbed areas to the rear cover. The rare Promotional Band is complete and is in Very Good++ condition with some spotting and creasing in places. The Band has the comments: 'The Wickedest man in the world', 'The king of depravity' et al. The wrapper and band look very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover . The book is accompanied by a Flyer for another Symonds' title ' The Magic of Aleister Crowley' and also a letter Signed by John Symonds dated 1958. In this letter Symonds details how to access Crowley's work. He finishes the letter : '...The only way to build up a collection of Crowleyana is to have plenty of money and bid for the items when they come up in Sotheby's!..'. The first of Symonds' four biographical books of Crowley which introduced readers to 'The Great Beast'. The book also includes, as an appendix, Gerald Yorke's ground-breaking Bibliography of Crowley. Symonds met Crowley a year before his death in 1947 and was named his literary executor. He was fascinated yet quite critical of his subject, leading Crowley's personal secretary Israel Regardie to label him 'that most hostile biographer'. Very scarce with such attributes.
