Striking B/W etchings by David Hockney

The Brothers Grimm & Hockney, David (Illus.) ~ Six fairy tales: from the Brothers Grimm With Original Etchings By David Hockney : Signed By David Hockney

Petersburg Press, London : 1970

The First UK printing published by Petersburg Press, London in 1970. First trade edition, 4¼" x 3", pp. [60]. The Book is in near Fine condition and appears unread, with just the merest hint of toning to the extreme page edges and text-block. Original full blue leather stamped in silver. Frontispiece and 37 illustrations by Hockney, several full-page. The first hardcover edition which precedes all other subsequent editions, particularly the 2012 reissued edition. Published in a small and limited run by St. Petersburg Press in conjunction with the Kasmin Gallery. None of the copies were commercially distributed or sold. This first edition is now rare. A brilliant production by David Hockney and designed as such by the London gallery, mainly for prospective buyers of the actual original etchings as a keepsake and handy reference at the same time. Printed on pristine-white, archival stock paper in London, to the highest standards. Considering its small size, the reproduction quality of the etchings is amazing in every respect. Hockney illustrates six fairy tales of Western literature: "The Little Sea Hare", "Fundevogel", "Rapunzel", "The Boy Who Left Home To Learn Fear", "Old Rinkrank", and "Rumpelstilzchen". The book has been signed (without dedication) in pen by David Hockney to the title page, where he has also lined through his printed name. A fine copy of this handsome production and extremely scarce as such. The book is protected in a removable Mylar archival cover.
